Hi everyone, this is my first post in this mailing list and I would
like to talk with you about a very important matter, at least for me,
concerning the name poll.
The problem is this. Since there is a reunion of Beryl and Compiz,
everyone thinks that there has to be a new name to this project too.
So the Composite Community was born to bring peace and unification
between the Beryl and Compiz Community. Several names has been
proposed: Fusion, Coral, Coco, etc.
Now, what I'm trying to suggest here is not to change any name.
Sounds crazy? Absolutely not. Let me explain.
Beryl became very famous because of its special effects,
configurator, whatever, I don't care now. But Beryl became VERY
famous. You can read about Beryl in every computer blog, magazine,
journal, not necessary related to Linux. Everybody talks about it and
here in Italy we saw something on a TG too!! Now, I don't know why it
is so, but Beryl became VERY famous and youtube, google and so on are
full of this name, brand, etc.
On the other side, Compoiz is the original project started by Novell
and it opened the way for a radiant future in the Linux Desktop
world. A lot of people knows about Compiz too, specially those who
followed the development of this project from the beginning.
Now, I don't thing it would be right to change the name Compiz.
Nobody asked to the Beryl community to fork (And it was not a fork,
and so on, let's avoid this because we all know it wasn't exactly a
fork). A lot of people uses Beryl and doesn't even know of the
existence of Compiz. That's weird and that's wrong.
From the beginning, Beryl wasn't a real fork. What distinguish Beryl
from Compiz are the plugins of the community and the configurator.
Somebody says the configurator is the most important part of Beryl, I
believe plugins are more important but the point is that Beryl worked
principally on plugins, configurator, emerald, etc. Not on the core
or on the main plugins (Except for something like the cube
trasparency, etc.).
Now, I believe Beryl should continue working on plugins and Compiz on
the main stable and most important part of the project. No need to
change the name. That's what I'm saying. We should create the
standard compiz packages such as compiz-core, compiz-plugins etc, and
there should be a package named:
beryl-compiz-plugins
Why? Several reasons.
1) Beryl is very well known and famous among the users public. It
would be a bad move to change its name. Everyone knows about Beryl,
thanks also to youtube and to the nice name.
2) Keeping the name and brand "Beryl" would avoid confusion in the
masses of users and at the same time the name compiz in the package
finally lets people know that Beryl is a set of plugins for compiz.
Or that's how it should become, of course. Looking in synaptic from
Ubuntu, for example, people would have Compiz already installed
(Feisty) and have to install the package beryl-compiz-plugins, with
the description pointing out that Beryl is a set of extra plugins,
community driven, working under Compiz. So Compiz wouldn't have to
write anymore on its about screen that "Compiz is not Bery!" and
everyone would know that the new Beryl works only with compiz
installed. At the same time, the name would be saved, of course, as I
said, for "Marketing" reasons.
3) Somebody says that Beryl had an horrible logo, etc. That's no
reason for rejecting it. Say we could drive it in a more professional
manner but we should definitely save the name not to generate
confusion, misinformation, panic ;) Normal users gets annoyed with
this things.
4) I read somebody proposing Compiz Fusion. This, in my opinion, is
not a good choice because it mentions only Compiz in the name and
Fusion stands for what? Say I'm a normal user, I don't read forums,
mailing lists and I only care about the finished product. So, why
should I know about the Beryl and Compiz reunion? And most important
then all, why should I care? So Fusion would not be a solution in my
opinion.
5) Every BIG desktop in the market is taking a position into an
element of the universe. Examples: OSX has Aqua (Water), Vista has
Aero (Air), KDE4 has Plasma (Energy, thunder, maybe fire). And KDE4
has now its own composite manager. OK, so compiz should seriously be
heading in the GNOME direction. In part it is already. GNOME should
have as an element of choice the earth, because it is related to
fayries and, of course, Gnomes. Gnomes are magic little creatures
linked to the earth. So the element of choice for this reunion should
be related to the earth. Sorry for saying it but Beryl was really
just perfect. Also because Gnomes are known for hiding under the
rainbows they're treasures. And in this cauldrons of treasures there
always is gold and also gems... and Beryl is a very precious gem. Not
to say the other very strong fact that everything related to Beryl is
a gem. Aquamarine, Heliodor, Emerald.... do you really want to throw
all of this very strong merchandise in the junk?
I don't think it would be a nice choice. Not that, as I sayd, Beryl
should become the MAIN name! The main name of the project should
remain COmpiz. Beryl would be the Extra plugins expansion set!
Well, for the conclusion. I think that all this thing of the name is
just about rivalry between Compiz community and Beryl. It should come
definitely to an end. Think about it. No reason for choosing a new
peace-maker name. Things could just be settled as they are for the
sake of the composite community and not because I prefer Beryl or
Compiz or so on. Let's stop, please, wasting our energyes in lkooking
for new names and brands and so on....
Compiz works, Beryl works, they're already known..... stop things
here please.
A new expantion package called
beryl-compiz-plugins
would be the best choice in my opinion. Think about it....
