Very good question. I'd say because too many people complain about
having compiz in the name (although nobody seems to care if compiz is
the core of his desktop :D ...). If I remember correctly, that was the
original reason for all this naming chaos.

So true :D ...

Definetly. The same way it is done well in almost all other open-source
projects (no irony here). There is some app with some name and logo and
there are many hundred pieces of community-driven artwork and extensions
for that app.
(A good example for this, which I stumbled upon yesterday, is
UbuntuStudio. I thought it was something very new, but it is nothing
more than an extended set of artwork and some metapackages. Nobody would
ever call it e.g. "Multimedix" or "Produnix" - it is 99.9% "Ubuntu" and
0.1% "Studio" ... no need for further explanation, I think)

I totally agree and I'd like to add that my proposals concerning those
naming-issues were more related to the unwillingness of having compiz in
the name. In the end it still would make most sense to call it compiz
<something> (like "compiz fusion" or "compiz ce").
I think this widely spread antipathy against the compiz-name is still
related to the misinformation that compcomm will be a new application
which replaces beryl and thus compiz will not be needed anymore.
Everyone (especially the former beryl officials) should continue
informing the users that "compcomm" is no application but an extension
to compiz. I am not sure if everyone out there knows that.
