[Compcomm] Deciding a name

I have already posted this in the forum:

"- Create a Nominating Committee of 3-5 members who
will have the responsibility of compiling the list of
the qualified names. Onestone has agreed to serve on
this committee. RYX and Kristian have expressed
interest in this process and I'd like to invite them
to serve as well. It would be good to have some more
volunteers who are able to keep an open mind."

I think this Nominating Committee should be made up of
exactly five persons. The three you mentioned already
sound fine to me, however in my opinion, there should
be two persons who are not developers or site admins,
but are merely community members / users.

"- The Nominating Committee will accept nominations
for up to 10 names. The nominating period will be for
5 days or until 5 names have been qualified and
endorsed by the Nominating Committee. It will take a
majority vote of the Nominating Committee to endorse a
name."

The only thing I would change here has to do with a
language nitpick. I would have it read like this:
...."The nominating period will be for 5 days or until
5 names have been qualified and endorsed by the
Nominating Committee, whichever comes second."
Otherwise, despite the capacity for 10 names, there
will only ever be five names (to choose from).

"- We will start a new thread on this mailing list and
another on the opencompositing.org forum for people to
propose names. Each submitted name *must* have the
following information to be considered by the
Nominating Committee:

- Name
- Available domain names
- At least one logo idea. This can be a written idea.
- Perform a web search and list the top 3 conflicts,
if any.
- A brief description of what the name means and why
we should use it.
- A brief description of any known negative
connotations or meanings."

I think that there should only be a post in the
forums. Admins and developers post here (on the
forums) already anyway, and we don't want anyone who
doesn't read the mailing list to complain (rightly)
about never seeing a nomination.

With regards to the way the thread is run. I think
moderators should prune out anything that isn't a name
submission with ruthlessness. There should be
absolutely no user comments on this thread to keep
things as simple as possible. Instead, users should be
encouraged to post a topic for their original name and
enlist the help of others (especially for artwork) in
putting together the most compelling submission that
they can. Revised submissions should not be accepted
because if they are, I fear the submissions thread
would be a mess. This would make each name thread a
"focus group" aimed at refinement, not discussion
about whether a name should be submitted or not.
People will gravitate towards the threads they feel
interested in. This would also have the effect of
pushing the timing of individual submissions back to
near the deadline. There is a distinct possibility
that a thread with a great idea might not get formally
submitted because a technical error at the last
second, or an organizational error between users
within a particular thread. The Nominating Committee
should still have the authority to look through name
development threads and select a well-developed name
even if something prevents it from being formally
submitted, or if a submission is made reasonably late.
That's my angle on it, though there might be other
angles I haven't considered, so please debate.

"- Once the Nominating Committee has 5-10 qualified
names, there will be a poll of the 10 names which will
last 3 days. The winner must have *majority* of all
votes to win. If no choice receives a majority, then
the bottom 6 choices will be dropped, and we'll
conduct another 3 day poll. If no choice receives a
majority in the 2nd poll, then the bottom 2 choices
will be dropped and the last 2 choices will make it to
the final 3 day poll. If there are less than 10 names
nominated, the bottom 50% would be dropped in each
poll."

Some might have a problem with the poll only lasting
three days. I don't (this was already discussed on the
Mailing List before). Keeping the polls short will
prevent everyone and his brother from voting. This
entire process will not be a quickie thing. This is
going to take some effort by contributors, and the
polls shouldn't be unfairly influenced by the votes of
people who do not understand and adhere to the vision
and the process.

"- The polling threads will be locked but discussion
will be allowed on other threads throughout the
process."

I Agree. If users organize their submissions by
starting separate topics for their names, then they
can discuss the poll in those topics, or create a poll
discussion topic on their own.

(And lastly, something I wrote in the forum which does
not apply so much here):

Finally, to all of the community members. Post
feedback, even if you agree with everything that is
going on. It is just as important to know that people
like the way things are going as it is to know that
they don't like the way things are going.
